- How did your passions when you were a child prepare you for your career as an adult? — Dr. Jones Wilson shared that as a child her passions for entrepreneurship were cultivated by her family activities. Her grandfather on her mother’s side had a garden in James Island, South Carolina where the family grew their own vegetables. In addition to that farming, her father grew herbs in their backyard. This farming legacy fueled her passion for gardening. She shared the challenges that accompany casting vision for farming to the descendants of slaves that were made to work in the fields. However, she went on to share the financial and social benefits of personal gardening.
Dr. Jones Wilson also shared about the entrepreneurial legacy that is so prevalent in her family. She communicated that her grandfather in Orangeburg, SC started his own funeral home many years ago. Her grandmother had a beauty salon. That legacy of business ownership in her family was influential in her perception of ownership.
4. What do they love the most about your jobs? — Dr. Jones Wilson shared that she loves the process itself. She communicated that her experience in the process was, “a journey … that I am enjoying every step of the way. Even as a new entrepreneur there is so much you have to learn. But when you love what you do, when you are passionate about it. It doesn’t feel like a job, it feels like fun…”
5. What is the biggest challenge in your career? — Dr. Jones Wilson shared that start up companies don’t always start with all the resources or the access to resources. However, she shared that she has a supportive family and is a client of the Women’s Business Center at Benedict College which is a new grant program which helps with support.
6. Based on what you know now about your vocation, what advice would you give to yourself if you could go back to the first day of the job? — She shared that she would tell herself to “relax”. She also said it has been helpful to know that as an entrepreneur she sets her own timeline so she doesn’t have to do everything in a day. Lastly, she communicated the importance of saying “no” and setting boundaries.
