(Imagine Exposure Vodcast Guest Interview — Dr. David Staten — M.E.R.G.E. Counseling and HBCU Times Magazine)

  1. Name of Guest — Dr. David Staten
  2. Career — Rehabilitation Counselor and Founder of HBCU Times Magazine
  3. How did your passions when you were a child prepare you for your career as an adult? — Dr. Staten shared that when he was a kid he was really into sports. (in addition to music and education) Sports taught him teamwork, hard work and the process of working with people. He also developed a sense of competition which he still uses now to help cultivate the counseling program at SC State University. He has been able to translate all of these passions into his work as an adult.
  4. What do they love the most about your jobs? — Dr. Staten shared that he enjoys the hopeful optimism that he encounters from his students at South Carolina State University. He then went on to name the litany of former students that are doing incredible professional work. Moreover, Dr. Staten shared a love for grant writing because it propels many first generation college students and gives him a (“multifaceted gentlemen” that happens to have ADHD) bevy of options to write for impact.
  5. What is your “Cultivate Countdown”?

Cultivate Countdown

  1. Start with a realistic assessment
  2. Plan
  3. Set Goals
  4. Execute
  5. Revise
  6. Repeat

6. Based on what you know now about your vocation, what advice would you give to yourself if you could go back to the first day of the job? Dr. Staten shared that he would have encouraged his younger self to have established a stronger foundation in business. He would possibly “double majored” in a way that would have allowed him to have courses in Business or Finance. He believes that all college students should have some business courses.

7. One motivational quote — “Stop talking, take action and start moving towards the idea in your head.”
